Jeck breaks record as Southern falls

Nikki Jeck used another solid all-around performance to add another record to her impressive resume. The senior guard scored nine points Thursday, making her Madison Southern’s all-time leading scorer, as the Lady Eagles suffered a 75-49 loss on the road at Boyle County. Jeck needed just seven points in surpass the mark set by Jared Carpenter 13 years ago.

The senior now has 1,543 career points.

“She is really a little embarrassed by all the attention that I and others have given her about breaking the record,” Southern coach Brian Cunigan said. “It’s a great accomplishment, but she’s not an individual player. She would give back all those points for a few more wins.” Jeck became the school’s all-time girls leading scorer earlier this month during a win over Frankfort (Jan. 3) and on Thursday had seven assists, seven steals and six rebounds as Southern fell to 6-12 with a fifth straight loss.

Brittany Calhoun had a team-high 23 points and also added four rebounds and three blocks. Alaina Hammonds had six points, Candace Himes had four points, Brooke Casteel had three points and Rachel Evans and Kassie Damrell had two points each.

Boyle County jumped out to a 27-7 first-quarter lead and Southern was never able to recover. The Lady Rebels hit a pair of three pointers in the first quarter and used a tough pressure defense to get easy points in transition.

Jeck will be honored by the school during a ceremony prior to the boys varsity home game against West Jessamine on Feb. 1. Carpenter is scheduled to be at the event. Carpenter is the only Southern basketball player to ever play Division I basketball. He went to Eastern Kentucky University for three seasons before transferring to Transylvania.
